Am Fuß der Rax

An old house at the foot of the Rax.
The doors are open again.

01 · Das Tal

People from Vienna have been coming up this valley for the summer air for more than a hundred years.

In 1926 Austria's first cable car opened here in Hirschwang. It still takes people to the top of the Rax.

Maurighof is down at the bottom, under the trees.

02 · Das Haus

Rooms made for living in.

Herringbone floors, doors taller than you are, and a chandelier in almost every room. None of it was put there for a photo. Feri and Lise keep the rooms the way they were meant to be used, with the windows open to the garden.

Some of these things are a hundred years old. The bath still has its checkered floor, the kitchen still has its big white cupboards, and the canopies are still red. Some of it needs mending. That's part of the work, and it's the good part.

04 · Der Tisch

Two kitchens,
one table.

05 · Der Garten

Tables under
the trees.

Benches in the shade, a fire pit, a grill and a pool. In summer people rent the garden for an evening, and they grill, swim and celebrate.

06 · Was kommt

Everything is possible here.

Said on the same walk

Behind the house the land keeps going. Two big meadows and a flock of sheep. Goats who get upset if you don't make time for them. A bee house that has had no bees for two years. A greenhouse that lost its glass in a storm, and a dog run nobody has used in fifty years. None of it is finished, and that is the invitation.

07 · Komm

Come up
the valley.

Stay in the house, sit at the table, or put on boots and do a round with the sheep. The work on the land is posted on the farm board. Anyone can take a job, and whoever does it gets the credit.
